The Silver Plough

The Silver Plough, Salisbury

A characterful village pub in Pitton, about five miles east of Salisbury, part of the small Chickpea Group. Seasonal, locally-sourced cooking, with sourdough pizza served all day.

The pub does not mark gluten free on its menus, so you will not identify your options by reading one. What it publishes instead is a promise about its people: its teams are trained to handle allergen information and will guide you through suitable options, and it asks you to raise any needs when you book. Diners report that this works well in practice. A coeliac who eats here regularly, most recently in August 2026, reports separate fryers, gluten free fish and chips and a gluten free Sunday roast including cauliflower cheese, and reviewers separately describe staff being clear about the gluten free choices and recommending puddings. None of that is confirmed by the pub itself yet.

Book ahead and say coeliac when you do, because that is the route the pub itself points you down. Two of the three menus carry a cross-contact line: staff will tell you about allergens but cannot fully guarantee against cross-contamination. The separate fryers come from diners rather than from the kitchen, so confirm the fryer arrangement when you order. The sourdough pizza dough is made off-site with no gluten free base, so pizza is not an option.

Diners tell me you keep separate fryers — can I check that is still the case today? Which of today's dishes can the kitchen do gluten free?

The pub publishes no gluten free menu marking, but its own allergen policy directs diners to speak to trained staff, and a coeliac who eats there regularly reports separate fryers, gluten free fish and chips and a gluten free Sunday roast, with independent reviewers corroborating that staff handle it well. The reports are consistent and recent but remain unconfirmed by the venue, so the offer is treated as real and the handling as unverified.

This information is researched but not guaranteed — menus and kitchen practices change. Always tell staff you are coeliac.
