Tony Barfoot, founder of the Salisbury Gluten Free Guide

About the guide — and me

I'm Tony Barfoot. I live just outside Salisbury, and I'm coeliac — so eating out here isn't a lifestyle choice for me, it's a question of what's actually safe.

I was diagnosed in 2024. Like a lot of coeliacs, I got tired of not knowing how things are prepared and whether I'm safe. While I was researching where to eat on a trip to Seville, I realised I'd quietly built myself a gluten-free guide to the city — and that I wished I had one for Salisbury too. So I made it, on home turf, where I have got some local knowledge.

The Salisbury Gluten Free Guide is free and independent. Venues can't pay to be listed, to rank higher, or to change what I write about them — I research each one, note what I've checked and when, and I'm honest about the difference between a dedicated gluten-free kitchen and a careful shared one. When I get something wrong, I fix it — usually the same day.

It's a guide, not a guarantee — always tell staff you're coeliac. But I hope it saves you the legwork I've had to do myself.
