Pub

The Waterloo Arms

Pikes Hill, SO43 7AS

Seventeenth-century thatched pub on Pikes Hill, a short walk from Lyndhurst centre, run by hosts Michael and Michelle. Gluten free items go in a separate fryer, and the printed menu marks gluten free dishes right through, from starters to Sunday roasts and stone baked pizza on gluten free bases.

Gluten free items are cooked in a fryer of their own, apart from the ordinary battered ones — the pub's own confirmation, given in answer to that question. The current menu marks gluten free or gluten free option dishes throughout: soup, prawn cocktail and pate among starters, honey roasted ham, chilli con carne, curry and pan fried chicken among mains, a chicken burger in a gluten free option, most sides, gluten free choices on the Sunday roast, and stone baked pizza with gluten free bases Monday to Saturday. Diners on FindMeGlutenFree also report gluten free bread and battered fish and chips.

The separate fryer covers the fried items, but beyond it the pub has not described what changes in the kitchen when a gluten free order comes in, and the menu's allergen note asks you to tell staff about allergies without saying what happens when you do. The stone baked pizza is worth a word too: whether the gluten free bases are kept apart from the ordinary dough has not been confirmed. Say you are coeliac when you order.

Are the gluten free pizza bases prepared and baked apart from the ordinary dough? What changes in the kitchen when a gluten free order comes in?
