Brockenhurst & Beaulieu

Pub

The Turfcutters Arms

Main Road, East Boldre, SO42 7WL

A traditional country pub on the open forest edge at East Boldre, with a big garden, dogs welcome and a home-cooked menu. More gluten aware than its quiet reputation suggests: the menu marks gluten free right through to the puddings.

The pub keeps a gluten free fryer and cooks the chips in it, and it makes its own gluten free batter. Asked whether the gluten free battered fish goes through that same gluten free fryer, the pub answered yes. The menu marks the kitchen's chilli, mushroom stroganoff, sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie and sorbets gluten free, while the beer battered fish of the day, ham egg and chips and the ploughman's can all be made gluten free on request. Diners describe the staff as very accommodating to coeliacs.

The fryer and the batter are both accounted for, which covers the fried side of the menu. Nothing published describes how gluten free dishes are kept apart away from the fryer, so say coeliac when you book — the pub asks for allergy requirements at that point — and say it again when you order.

How are gluten free dishes kept apart during preparation, away from the fryer?
