Brockenhurst & Beaulieu

Hotel

The Pig

Beaulieu Road, SO42 7QL

The original Pig hotel, a kitchen-garden restaurant in a 1602 lodge outside Brockenhurst, serving a daily-changing 25 Mile Menu built around its own walled garden and Hampshire suppliers.

Nothing on the daily menu is marked gluten free, but the cooking is ingredient-led and many dishes are built on meat, fish and garden vegetables rather than pastry or bread. My Gluten Free Guide's readers repeatedly recommend it as a treat meal that caters ably for coeliacs. Allergen information is held by the team and via a QR code on the menu rather than printed against dishes.

The menu itself says the kitchen cannot guarantee any dish is completely allergen free, and it changes daily, so what was adaptable last week may not be this week. Raise coeliac disease when booking and again at the table so the team can walk the day's menu with you.

Which of today's dishes can be made gluten free, and which are off the table entirely? How does the kitchen keep a coeliac order apart from bread, focaccia and pasta being prepared alongside? Are the chips cooked in a fryer shared with battered or floured items?
