The Old Station Tea Rooms, Holmsley

Station Road, Holmsley, BH24 4HY

Victorian railway station on the old Brockenhurst to Ringwood line, now a much-loved tea rooms with platform seating deep in the forest near Burley. A gluten free cream tea sits on the printed menu, and the kitchen keeps a separate fryer for gluten free food.

The cream tea comes gluten free, and there is gluten free Peroni at the bar. The lunch menu marks soup and the ham, eggs and chips gluten free, and the chips come out of a fryer kept for gluten free food. The gluten free scones and cakes are bought in rather than baked on site: the scones arrive individually packaged, and staff wash their hands and clear the serving space before handling them; the cakes are served with their own tongs. Diners also report gluten free bread and rolls on request, sandwiches, breakfasts and a full gluten free afternoon tea.

This is a small kitchen that handles gluten and most of the food is made on site, so the tea rooms are straight about the limits: their menu says that with the range of ingredients they use, a dish may be at risk of cross-contamination. The gluten free scones and cakes sidestep that because they arrive sealed. Say you are coeliac when you order.

Which items today come from the gluten free fryer?
