Ringwood & Burley

Pub

The Burley Inn

The Cross, BH24 4AB

Village-centre freehouse at the Burley crossroads run by the small New Forest Pub Company, doing pies, pub classics and cream teas all day. The printed menu marks a handful of dishes gluten-free, including a gluten-free pastry tart the kitchen clearly makes on purpose.

The current menu marks around eight dishes gluten-free — beef bourguignon, chicken jalfrezi, fish pie, a chickpea and spinach curry, and a vegan and gluten-free shortcrust seeded tart among them, plus a couple of marked puddings. It is a fixed marked list rather than a swap-anything approach; the burgers, scampi and cream tea are not offered gluten-free.

The allergen note simply asks you to speak to staff about ingredients, with no cross-contact detail — and one line worth knowing: the menu states their frying oil contains genetically modified soya and that trace nuts may be present, which tells you the kitchen shares equipment. Order at the bar and say you are coeliac.

Are the gluten-free marked dishes prepared apart from the breaded and pastry items? Is anything gluten-free cooked in the shared fryer?
